Die Medienvielfalt steht unter Druck: Digitale Plattformen, neue Marktstrukturen und algorithmische Auswahlmechanismen verändern die öffentliche Kommunikation und stellen demokratische Prozesse vor spürbare Herausforderungen.
Bei unserer Veranstaltung gehen Dr. Christian Mathias Wellbrock (Hamburg Media School) und Professor Dr. Mark Cole (Institut für Europäisches Medienrecht e. V.) mit zwei fachlichen Einordnungen auf diese Entwicklung ein – aus ökonomischer und europarechtlicher Perspektive. Dabei rücken sie die Frage in den Mittelpunkt, wie Medienvielfalt unter veränderten Bedingungen zukunftsfähig gesichert werden kann.
Ein europäischer Blick auf die Medienzukunft
Anschließend rücken wir Europas Rolle in den Mittelpunkt. Ein Panel – unter anderem mit Nathanael Liminski, Minister für Bundes- und Europaangelegenheiten, Internationales sowie Medien des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen – diskutiert den Leitgedanken: „Ein starkes Europa braucht starke und vielfältige Medien.“
Besonders im Fokus: die bevorstehende Revision der Richtlinie über audiovisuelle Mediendienste (AVMD‑RL) und ihre Bedeutung für eine moderne, wirksame Medienvielfaltssicherung.

Insights from academia and practice
Ensuring media plurality poses new challenges in an increasingly digital and rapidly changing media environment. Platforms, new market structures, and algorithmic systems are reshaping public communication and putting democratic processes to the test.
Dr. Christian Mathias Wellbrock (Hamburg Media School) and Professor Dr. Mark Cole (Institute of European Media Law) will provide two expert perspectives on these developments – one economic and one European legal. Their contributions focus on the central question of how media plurality can be secured for the future under changing conditions.
A European perspective on the future of media
The second part of the event shifts the focus to the European level. A panel – including Nathanael Liminski, Minister for Federal and European Affairs, International Affairs and Media of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia – will discuss the guiding theme: “A strong Europe needs strong and diverse media.”
A particular focus will be on the upcoming revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) and its role in shaping a modern framework for safeguarding media plurality.
